Week of The Hypothesis

13 December, 2008

Assalamu Alikum,

How are you all? I hope you are all fine and enjoying good health.

First of All, I would like to send my warmest feelings and express my best wishes for you all hoping you were able to enjoy the Eid and wishing that it was days of joy and happiness to every one of you. May Allah Bless and Save you all.

Secondly, after enjoying the Eid and eating much meat :D , it is time now for going back to the hard working and the required efforts for finishing the different duties demanded by Dr. Ghars.

To remind you all and to refresh your memories, Dr. Ghars asked us to have a kind of brain storming on the different hypothesis that can be brought up for the 4 titles we were asked to formulate reports on.

Hypothesis is simply about making prepositions with the ability to defend and explain them.

For Example: Finding the relationship between different variables that may affect the conclusion brought up from comparing indicators to standards i.e. relationships that can be ” and must be” tested for proving its validity.

Hypothesis can only be accepted  if it can be applied under any circumstances and in any place.

Examples of Hypothesis:

- The relationship between bad weather and BOP Short-Run Deficit and how to overcome it.

- The relationship between Oil prices and BOP Short-Run Deficit and how to overcome it.

After stating the above explanation and examples, I hope the issue is well clarified and it will be a guide for us during the brain storming this week Insha’Allah. Please all, come up with your ideas of what hypothesis can be related to the 4 titles we are working on and let us start from now so that we will be able Insha’Allah to finish before Thursday.

Lastly, I think it is time now for all of us to think together in all the topics not every group in their topic alone because time for writing the reports individually is approaching and let us start the training on such stage from now.

My Best Regards,

Anas Elshamy

Growth Rate

3 December, 2008

Growth rate of countries that are in the take-off stage :

1:_ALGERIA= 4.5 %..
2:_Philipenes = 7.3 %
3:_Peru = 9 %
4:_Chile =  5.1 %
5:_ Bulgaria = 6.2 %
6:_Tunisia = 6.3%
7:_India = 9 %
8:_Brazil = 5.4 %
9:_Uruguay = 7.4 %
10:_Morocco =2.2 %

All of these countries’ economies are passing through a stage of transition through some economic reforms to attract more investment and  trying to increase foreign and domestic investment in more than one sector (satisfying the conditions of the take-off stage).

Therefore average GDP growth rate for countries in the take-off stage  = 6.24 %

We should find the Egyptian GDP growth rate BUT after removing the effect or increase of Suez canal ,and the petroleum sector ,where both of them don’t reflect increase in production .

External Debt: Final Standards

30 November, 2008

Assalamu Alikum,

These are the final standards that we at the group came up with. Please, aplly based upon them using the actual indicators and if you have any, please come forward with it.

* For most countries (those with an export-to-GDP ratio of less than 30% and with a low debt in relation to fiscal revenues despite a relatively moderate revenue performance (less than 15% of GDP), a country’s debt is deemed to be ‘unsustainable’ if the Net Present Value of its total external debt is more than 150% of its average exports.

* For countries which are exceptionally open (with an export-to-GDP ratio of more than 30% and with a very high debt in relation to fiscal revenues despite a relatively good revenue performance (above 15% of GDP) a debt to revenue criteria is applied. For these countries, the debt sustainability target is set so that the Net Present Value of debt is at 250% of revenues at the decision point.

Please all, let us start applying through indicators and finding out the current situation of Egypt.
